I am an artist who lives in San Francisco and works out of an art studio in downtown civic center. My art practice centers around painting and the expression of my perspective as a white cis male artist and a blue collar worker. Inspired by my experience in the now and all of it—the beauty and the ugly—I see painting as a way to escape existential darkness by directly addressing what is observed, subduing logic to highlight the omnipotent power of emotions. In this way, painting allows one to drive change, redefine power, and move towards the light.
Originating from the traditional painterliness of Frans Hals, and the immediacy of Cecily Brown and Luc Tuymans, my subject matter leans towards introspection and groundedness in reality. The icons of my paintings invite the viewer in with the vibrancy of California colors like that of Thiebaud, Hockney and Richter or a more rich and deep palette like that of Muzae Sesay.
While I tend to focus on figurative painting and contemporary social realism, I have recently broken the binary thinking of either/or by beginning my journey towards abstract depictions. My abstract journey has helped me find solace in my ability to imprint the depth of my feelings, like a journal entry, using colors, form, and motion to evoke what words cannot fully describe. My art practice is ever expanding through the figurative and abstract realms of painting, allowing me to move deeper into individuation, not knowing my destination, only merely observing my existence as deeply possible.
